Top six LGBTQ comic book characters.

Over the course of time comics have tackled different thoughts and issues, however none has received as much attention as the sexuality of certain characters. Here’s a list of six such characters whose sexual identity became a hot topic among fans.

6. Northstar

Northstar is a prominent member of Alpha Fight and a twin brother to Aurora. Known for many things, Northstar has also attracted a lot of attention to himself as an openly gay character. Not only this, he is also the first gay character to have a same sex marriage. In the #51 edition of Astonishing X-men, Northstar is married to his long time partner Kyle. After the release of the comic, Marvel’s editor in chief commented on the same by saying “Our comics are always best when they respond to and reflect developments in the real world. We’ve been doing that for decades, and this is just the latest expression of that.”

5. Iceman

An integral part of the X-men comics, Iceman is a character who had a hard time admitting he’s gay. Iceman was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee and first appeared alongside Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel, Professor Xavier, and Beast in X-Men #1 back in 1963. What readers had suspected for years finally came into light in 2015, when the original X-Men travel into the future to the present day. After a conversation with Jean Grey, Iceman realises that she already knows what he is so afraid to admit, that he is gay. Soon after, the present-day iceman confesses that he had been hiding this secret all his adult life.

4. Harley Quinn

One of DC’s most popular characters, Harley Quinn is the on-off girlfriend of joker. She is much younger than other characters but has managed to be one of the most iconic one. For years fans have linked her with Poison Ivy and rightly so after their shared flirtatious moments hinting at their sexuality. DC however never acknowledged the issue until 2017, when Quinn shared a comic book kiss with poison ivy in Harley Quinn #25.

3. Wonder Woman

Wonder woman was created by William Moulton Marston. A fun fact here is that he was married to Elizabeth Marston and the couple was quite open about having a girlfriend together, Olive Bryne. Not that Marston’s personal life had any impact on Wonder woman but, DC certainly had dropped several hints pointing towards her sexuality. It wasn’t until Greg Rucka was asked repeatedly about her sexual identity that he confirmed the speculation with “the answer is obviously yes”.

2. Deadpool

One of the most refreshing characters of Marvel is the Deadpool. He balances the environment out when things get too serious for marvel. The character’s dialogues are also written with the same energy when talking about his sexual attractions. Gerry Duggan, the long time Deadpool writer has also stated that Deadpool is attracted to “anything with a pulse”. Given the immense popularity of the character, Deadpool is one of the greatest LGBTQ character attracting readers from all ages and opinions.

1. Batwoman

Batwoman is the first openly gay comic book character to lead a television show. Kate Kane is a character who was traumatised by the kidnapping and murder of her sister and her mother growing up. Living with her father, she joined the marine to impress him however, was discharged after she came out as a lesbian. Not long after, she found herself on the wrong side of a mugging. Fortunately for her as the muggler moved in, Batman rescued her. Intruiged by the thrill after watching batman she transforms herself into the newest version of batwoman.
