Set in a city with a reputation for crime, where five men have died, all of whom were kings of the underworld. Despite the fact that the incident took place in a packed room, no one knows who did it. Therefore, A detective is tasked with uncovering the truth and solving the mystery of the sixth man.
Created by writer Todd black, 5 bullets 6 Men is not your typical detective story. The story revolves around Detective Waverly, who has had a long night as five of the city's biggest and worst criminals have been discovered dead. All of them sat around a table and fired at once. The death of these 5 men leaves us with the mystery of a sixth man and detective Waverly is here to solve just that.
The gumshoe trop is written smoothly which can be seen in the introduction of the detective. As the character is brought into light, we realize that detective Waverly is one of the very few good officers in the city that is filled with crime. Black’s work in dropping hints leading to the culprit is commendable and will keep you hooked. The flexible writing is evidence that Black has a strong understanding of the genre.
Bringing the attention to the art in the comic, it would be fair to call it a good job done. Alex Gargia’s stylized black and white art does justice to the storyline with thin lines and detailing. For the most part, it works, though particular body styles and stances may require a little more attention, as they can appear a little stiff. Work on the text style also needs to be done. To compliment his art, Gargia used double duty on letters however it lacks consistency. The comic contains word bubbles that suddenly turn into arrows. There is difference in the size of fonts too which is not very visually pleasing.
As a whole the comic is well written and developed. The noir gumshoe is exciting and the elements of the story will keep you hooked. The story is worth your time.
